About the artist at Atelier Coquille

Yukiko is a Melbourne based artist who was born and brought up in central Tokyo surrounded by greenery (despite the image most people have of the city) as well as the well-known busy streets, also spending time in rural towns with her grandparents in her childhood before moving to Australia as an adult in 1999. She has always been captivated by little things everywhere in her daily life; the shining colours of grains of sand or asphalt, the ever-changing shapes of clouds or a passer-by’s garment, the clearness of the water that she feels through her skin when she taps her toes in the ocean, a crease on a human face (aka wrinkle) etc. and they are all beautiful.
Her works have been described as “portals to presence” for she captures and breaks down the fleeting moments in front of her to a beautiful simple form which represents the impermanence; truth of nature and life. It enables the viewers to access “the whole world” and appreciate the present moment.
When an elderly collector of one of her works told her that her artwork in his home represents “everything in my life”; all of the troubles, tribulations, turbulences and hardship in life and all the triumphs, happiness and peace that came out of them, Yukiko was encouraged to finally peek out of her own coquille (shell) to share her works with a wider audience so that one more people get to experience them.
